GERMAN-AMERICAN WOMEN’S CLUB OF MUNICH

Welcome!

We are the German American Women’s Club Munich, which was initiated in 1948 by Munich women, the wives of American military officers and Her Royal Highness Pilar von Bayern. This became possible once the non-fraternization laws were loosened by General Lucius D. Clay, Military Governor of the US occupied zone in Germany. The Club became a place of interaction between Germans and Americans, furthering bi-lateral understanding.

In those days, German American Clubs in many west German cities were laying the foundation for German American friendship.

Since the beginning, it has been a special focus of our Club to develop this friendship further. As a result, we sponsor the German American Student Exchange and Youth Programs, which are, incidentally, the only such programs that are privately financed. Through the Student Exchange Program, our Club enables students to study for one year at the university level in their respective host country. The Youth Program provides an opportunity for German and American youth to get to know one another by attending seminars as well as through educational and get-acquainted trips to the USA.

With the same level of commitment, we are continuing our long tradition of charity work. Currently, we are providing support to 17 charity organizations in the Munich area. Our Club holds three benefit events each year: Since 1949 the Silver Tea has been held during November in the Kaisersaal (Imperial Hall) of the Residence and the Magnolia Ball has taken place in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof during Carnival season since 1951. In September 2021, the Inclusion Golf Tournament was added. All donations are used to further our charity projects.

The approximate 170 members of our Club enjoy meeting one another at monthly meetings which include a program, as well as participating in various interest groups, and volunteering for a wide range of activities for our Club.

Honorary members of our Club include the spouse of the US Consul General in Munich, the wives of the current Bavarian Minister President and the Munich Mayor, and also Her Royal Highness Princess Ursula von Bayern and Mrs. Karin Stoiber.

This year we are looking back at 75 years of Club history (1948-2023).
